While working at the pediatric unit, I had the opportunity to witness a scenario where culture greatly influenced family response to illness. The instance involved a 16-year-old patient of Hispanic origin diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Hence, insulin prescription could be eventually required. When the nurse prepared to administer an insulin shot, the patient’s mother vehemently objected to the prescription. According to her, insulin shots are associated with blindness. The patient’s mother stated that she could not follow the prescriptions at home even though we insisted on them. Instead, she had selected other treatment options, which included the use of traditional herbs able to remedy the illness.
The unit in-charge nurse’s attempts to persuade the mother to accept the treatment model that involved insulin were futile. Therefore, the in-charge nurse was forced to find and call a clinical counselor of Hispanic origin who could intervene in the discussion. Fortunately, the counselor had managed to convince the mother who actually apologized for demonstrating ignorance. Later, I realized that while medicine considered insulin safe, Hispanic traditional beliefs associated its use with the possibility of becoming blind (Ramar & Desai, 2010).
